Following the two previously published anthologies of Taiwan literature in the Czech Republic, i.e. The Morning Jasmine (Dharma Gaia, 2001) and The Taste of Apples: Modern Taiwanese Short Stories (Brody, 2006), this collection of short stories focuses on Taiwanese women’s fiction. Adopting a more systematic approach and comprising of 13 short stories published between the years 1965-2007, this book aims to introduce modern fiction by Taiwanese women authors to Czech reader, including its historical developments, its multifacetedness and the impressive achievements of various authors. The “women’s literature” as understood by this anthology includes any literary work by a woman author, not only fiction dealing with problems specific to women or describing women’s struggle for self-development or consciousness raising (despite the fact that the latter still constitutes the majority of the selected texts). The writers and the short stories were selected from the already recognized canonical authors and texts, while special consideration was also given to the artistic qualities and readability of the particular short stories including also the degree of representativeness regarding the particular historical and literary period. The anthology also includes a foreword written by the editor, which provides a brief introduction to the developments of Taiwanese women’s fiction, including analysis of social and historical background as well as themes, techniques and literary forms characteristic of texts from different periods, providing numerous examples from the selected texts included in the anthology. Affixed to the book are cameos of the selected writers which provide basic information about the author and her oeuvre, including the representativeness and significance of the selected short story as regards the whole body of her works, helping Czech readers to grasp the cultural and historical context of the particular texts.
