The semi-annual publication Modern Chinese Literature and Culture (1999-), formerly Modern Chinese Literature (1984-1998) is a peer-reviewed, multi-disciplinary cultural studies journal. The journal broadly explains that Chinese literature includes works which are written in Chinese and works which are written in other languages by Chinese across the world. The journal publishes not only on literature, but also on a wide range of themes, such as pop culture, regional culture, material culture, visual art, performance art, print, film, television, and so on. It attempts to challenge the way traditional China and its modernity and cultural development is represented in Western society. Based on the Conference on Contemporary Chinese Fiction from Taiwan held at the University of Colorado Boulder in the U.S. (1991), Modern Chinese Literature has collected papers presented at the conference and published volume 6, issues 1 & 2. This double issue was also subsidized by the Council for Cultural Planning and Development, Executive Yuan, R.O.C.
