The stories of Tasi Wen-Fu collected here were all written and set in Taiwan between the mid-1950s and the late 1970s, reflecting a tumultuous upheaval and transformations caused by the new social and economic forces at the time. Unlike most of the modern fiction at the time that had previously been translated in English that focuses on all magnitude of suffering in contemporary Chinese history, these stories instead depict ordinary folks trapped in minor tragedies in everyday life and their attempts at seeking redemptions out of the mental throes imposed by acutely agonizing incidents that intrude on their life. Cai’s short stories portray a fast-changing society, in which everyone is disoriented, a state Cai is well adept at describing, particularly vividly manifested in female protagonists.
