In 1921, Taiwanese students studying in Japan set up the ‘Taiwan Cultural Association.’ The launch of its magazine Taiwan meant the official debut of Taiwan’s New Literature. The development of Taiwan's New Literature is closely linked with the Taiwanese people’s movement for political rights under the colonial rule of Japanese imperialism, and therefore from form to content it did not conform to the expectations of that era. Against this historical backdrop, Lai Ho is a representative Taiwanese writer, not only for his form, but also for his content and concepts. Lai Ho has around 30 works of fiction in total, including his unpublished manuscripts. The selected eight novels in this omnibus, Come Together, The Steelyard, Mr. Snake, Making Trouble, The Homecoming, Too bad she died, Romantic Breach, A Dissatisfying New Year, are works that best represent the literary characteristics of Lai Ho’s novels and short stories as well as the era of their creation. These works help the reader to gain an understanding of the background in which Taiwan's New Literature was produced. The reader will feel the power, meaning, and impact of Lai Ho’s literary works, which will invite critical reflection on Taiwan’s recent and contemporary history and recognition issues.
