Cheng Ching-wen has won the Ninth Taiwan National Culture and Art Award. He was born in 1932 at Taoyuan, Taiwan. After graduating from the Department of Business at National Taiwan University, he had worked in Hua-Nan Commercial bank for more than forty years until 1998. His literary works include novels, fairy tales, literature and cultural criticism, and have also been translated into Japanese, English, German, Korean, and other languages. The novel, Mound Ant Clan, regards animals in the barren desert as major characters to satirize the political and social phenomena in Taiwan nowadays. The words used in Mound Ant Clan are quite weird and sly, and the atmosphere in the story is grand and magnificent as an allegory of epic which is comparable with George Orwell's classic work Animal Farm. With imaginative literary thought and abundant knowledge of natural ecology, the author creates a bizarre and eerie world of animals in relentless and ruthless desert. In the way of symbolic form to fit the modern political realities, and from an angle of fairy tales to create stories, he depicts the cautionary prophecy full of deep concern and caring over Taiwan. The Japanese translator Nisida Masaru was born in Sizuoka, Japan, graduating from the Department of Literature at Tokyo University and as a professor of Literature Department of Japan Hosei University, who is currently a representative of Colonial Culture Society.
