Syman Rapongan (1957-), is an author and anthropologist who made a significant breakthrough in Taiwan ocean literature. As striving for the anti-nuclear self-preservation in Orchid Island, as well as for the self-determination for Tao people, he practically appreciated the beauty of Tao's culture, along with the philosophy of blue water. Ocean, flying fishes, sea spirits and traditional life wisdom of Tao people became the main discussion subject in his works. The book Deep Love for Cold Sea is a collection of 13 articles from Syman Rapongan himself. With a precise and exquisite style of writing, this book represents the touching and respectful journey of the author about how he made the decision of moving away from Orchid Island to Taipei. Then, after facing difficulties and confronting frustrations in the metropolis he decided to go back to the homeland seeking for the essence of his mother culture and to construct his perspective of literature from the love for the ocean. By using affectionate wordings, he recreated the spiritual and the respectful attitude toward nature of Tao people, which beautifully preserved the pride of their culture. The translator Lee Juno earned her PhD in Modern literature at Seoul National University College of Chinese Language and has served as a professor at Chonnam National University in Korea.
