This novel, first published in 1994, is the first one of the Salt Farm trilogy. The story takes place in Cigu, Tainan, which is the hometown of the author, Suh-Fen Tsai. The protagonists Ming-Yueh and Ta-fang are a loving couple in their adolescence; however, due to Ming-Yueh’s parents’ arrangement, she has to marry someone else. Her husband, Ching-sheng, not only is addicted to gambling but also beats her brutally once in a while. Ming-Yueh’s experience is similar to those of many women in traditional society of Taiwan. That is, they have to accept their parents’ arrangement, such as marrying a stranger and living the rest of their lives with him. At the beginning of the book, the protagonists make a living through salt farming. In the 1970s, however, Ming-Yueh and others choose to move to Kaohsiung and work in the factory, which reflects the economic change in Taiwan at that time. The story has been adapted into TV series by Taiwan Public Television Service.
