  • Abstract

The book The Man with the Compound Eyes is divided into 11 chapters. It is an unprecedentedly creative fiction illustrating a poetic, magical, and sad future. It attempts to depict the struggles between life and fate, thereby manifesting the reality and values of life truthfully. Through this novel, Wu expresses his desires of having profound conversations with himself. There is a mixed approach of metafiction, fantasy, and fable in this realistic depiction. Impressively, The Man with the Compound Eyes is the first Taiwan novel whose copyright was bought by foreign mainstream literature publishers. This distinctive achievement of having international editions in English and French undoubtedly catches immense attention from the domestic media. The French translator, Gwennaël Gaffric, is an associate professor at the University Jean Moulin Lyon 3 in France. Other than Wu’s second novel of The Man with the Compound Eyes, which was published in 2014 in French, he had also translated Wu’s first novel of Routes in the Dream.
