Xiang-hai Jing (1976-) is a poet, a writer, and a psychiatric specialist. He began his career in creative writing from an early age. While he was at college, he started publishing his works on network platforms, such as the BBS (Bulletin Board System, a popular platform in Taiwan mainly targeting university students), blogs, SNS, and so on. His innovative breakthroughs in publication forms and writing styles have significantly impacted the new generation of writers. Xiang-hai Jing is good at applying simple but humorous description to convey sharp and profound meanings. This work of poetry, A Dream, is divided into four axes: “A Dream”, “B Sorrow”, “C Play” and “:D” explained below. Each title has not only played with the pronunciation and meaning of words but also led the readers further into the main ideas of each section. “A Dream”, reads like the Japanese manga character Doraemon, depicting the boundless and abundant emotions and consciousness of modern people as Doraemon’s four-dimensional pouch. “B Sorrow”, pronounced pi-ai in Taiwanese, illustrates the sadness of growing up. "C Play" uses its literal meaning to express a sense of fun and frolic. “:D” takes an emoticon to convey the diverse interactions and emotions in human life. The translator, Oikawa Akane, is currently a lecturer at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and Kanda University of International Studies. Her research areas include Chinese modern literature, Japanese-Chinese comparative literature, and Taiwan literature. She has translated many other works of Taiwan modern poetry as well.
