Wu Ming-yi (1971-), is a professor of the Department of Sinophone Literatures at National Donghua University. Receiving attention from international publishers, his literary works have been translated into French, English, Japanese, Korean, Czeck, and Turkish. The Stolen Bicycle begins with a bike that was stolen a long time ago. This story spans the Japanese colonial period, the World War II period, the postwar period, and up to the present. It portrays a story about the conflict and reconciliation among individuals, families, and ethnic groups, connecting the historical development and war memories between Taiwan and East Asia. Wu Ming-yi has adopted rigorous field research and criticism of historical materials in this work, to not only record those crucial epochs but also to bring a particular historical atmosphere to the readers. This edition was shortlisted for Japan’s Best Translation Award in 2019. The translator Amano Kentaro (1971-2018) had always endeavored to translate and promote Taiwan literature. He was also the translator of Wu Ming-yi’s other work, The Magician on the Skywalk.
