Chung Chao-cheng (1925-), is a Taiwanese writer who devotes his life to the promotion and revitalization of Taiwan literature and Hakka culture. As one of the most important writers from the first generation after the war, he is not only a symbolic figure of Hakka literature but also regarded as "the mother of Taiwan literature." The Passionate Goethe (no English edition) takes Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), a German writer and a statesman who led the Sturm und Drang literary movement in Europe, as the main character. The storyline starts from the elderly Goethe’s deep love with a young lady and continues with his flashbacks of the love stories in his life. It tells of the romances between the passionate Goethe and his soulmates. Through exploring the passion and meaning of life, Goethe’s intense emotions have enriched his literary works and thoughts. This novel represents a brand-new creative style for Chung Chao-cheng, who tries to break through his previous style of taking the land and people in Taiwan as the subject. The translator, Nagai Eriko, is a lecturer in the Department of Applied Japanese at Aletheia University. Her translation works also include theses and subtitles of Japanese traditional dramas.
