Yeh Shih-tao (1925-2008) was one of the most important writers in Taiwan’s modern literary history. As a writer who spanned the two generations of Japanese rule and the post-war period, Yeh Shih-tao overcame major language barriers writing in both Japanese and later Chinese, devoting his entire life to the art of writing; his writing career lasted for more than 60 years. He is the author of the critical literary classic A History of Taiwan Literature. In 2008, the National Museum of Taiwan Literature and the Bureau of Cultural Affairs of Kaohsiung City Government published The Collected Works of Yeh Shih-tao, which was 20 massive volumes.
Spring Dream at Gourd Alley was originally published in 1968 as Yeh Shih-tao’s first book. The Malaysian translation gets its name from this book and features eight short stories assembled in one volume. The setting of the stories is mainly in Tainan, portraying the streets and alleyways of Hú-siâⁿ (Fucheng) and the lives of ordinary people. The writing is highly characteristic of the local writing style.
One of the editors, Chen Yi-Yuan, is a professor in the department of Chinese Literature at National Cheng Kung University, promoting the translation of Taiwan literature for The New Southbound Policy, including the Vietnamese versions of A History of Taiwan Literature and Spring Dream at Gourd Alley. The other editor, Fan Pik Wah, who is chair of Department of Chinese Studies at University of Malaya, united a translation team of ethnic Malaysian and ethnic Chinese students and consulted local writers to polish up and collaborate on the translation’s completion.
