The protagonist referring himself as “I” has seen nothing but troubles before he meets Qiuzi. She brings serenity as well as hope into his life. They wants nothing else but stay together in their little house and their little marriage. But that comes to a halt when Qiuzi wins a lottery in the form of a camera. Through photography, the couple comes to acquaint the local gentry, Luo. Qiuzi acquiesces to Luo’s advancement in the hope of benefiting her husband’s career. Then she disappears in shame. “I” begins his indefinite waiting for Qiuzi’s return. Wang Ting-Kuo tells a melodramatic yet profound story in My Enemy’s Cherry Tree, which is the novelist’s most audacious narrative attempt to date. While the story concerns “I”, Qiuzi and Luo, the latter two are absent in the whole narrative. Narrated solely in the protagonist’s point of view, My Enemy’s Cherry Tree proceeds with calm as much as with under-the-surface anguish. Wang Ting-Kuo again treats readers with his terse sentences and stylistic prose. Himself an entrepreneur by day, Wang Ting-Kuo demonstrates his management ability of story-telling in My Enemy’s Cherry Tree.
