Critics hail The Man With the Compound Eyes as the pinnacle of ecological writing of Taiwan in the new millennium. The novel traces the intertwining life trajectories of Atile’i, an ostracized of the tribe Wao Wao, and Alice, an bereaved professor living in the costal Taiwan. Both protagonists’ lives has been heavily influenced by conventions and personal loss as well as climate change. In a narrative permeated with images of trash, flood, and erosion, Wu Ming-yi leads readers into a world that is at once realistic and magical, where ethics and obscenity are borderline indistinguishable, yet inevitably under the sway of nature. The nature, which is almost a protagonist in the narrative, not only lends agencies to the adventures of Atile’i and Alice but also imposes destruction despite their utmost effort of evasion. Since its publication in 2011, The Man With the Compound Eyes has become the indispensable landmark of the Taiwanese writing about environment, whose drastic changes shape the lives and destinies on the island as a whole.
