The Anthology of Taiwan Indigenous Literature: Poetry and Prose is the result of a project promoted by the Council of Indigenous Peoples, “The Anthology of Taiwan Indigenous Literature in Translation,” collecting 39 poems and 27 proses by 34 indigenous authors published from 1960 to 2000.
This anthology series includes short stories, new poetry, and essays. The contents include traditional indigenous cultures, customs, folklore and contemporary observations thereby demonstrating the unique cultural backgrounds and linguistic diversity of the indigenous peoples. By reflecting on the works during this time of violent political and economic changes in Taiwan society, indigenous people show concern and profound consideration towards self-identity and cultural differences.
As for the linguistic symbols of the indigenous people, each ethnic group has their own developmental context and inheritance, and this is an important cultural resource for Austronesian languages. Through the publication of this anthology series, it is hoped that a greater degree of contact and exchange can occur among the other Austronesian indigenous literatures of the Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia, and so on.
