Yeh Shih-tao (1925-2008) was born in Hú-siâⁿ (modern-day Tainan). At age 16 he began to compose in Japanese, and at age 18 he published his first works in Bungei Taiwan (Literature Taiwan) under the direction of Nishikawa Mitsuru. After the war, he served as an elementary school teacher until his retirement. He devoted his entire life to the art of writing; his writing career lasted for more than 60 years. After 1950, Yeh began to publish works in Chinese; he didn’t stop composing due to the change of languages. He was an author whose life straddled the two generations of the Japanese Colonial Era in Taiwan and the post-war period. His works consist of novels, literary criticism, essays, memoirs, and translations.
A History of Taiwan Literature was published before the lifting of Martial Law in 1987. It is the first post-war treatise introducing and discussing the literary history of “Taiwan” in a systematic manner and from the viewpoint of Taiwan’s people. Yeh Shih-tao emphasized the autonomy of literature and established a literary history discourse and historical perspective with a Taiwan consciousness. The whole book is divided into seven chapters beginning with traditional literature and discusses the unfolding of Taiwan’s New Literature Movement, as well as defining a 10-year post-war period ending in the early 1980s, so as to divide Taiwan literature’s development process, characteristics, and authors’ works into stages and offer analysis.
