Wu Ming-yi (born 1971), a writer and professor of Chinese literature at National Dong Hwa University, primarily composes essays and fiction. He also specializes in painting and photography. His works over the years have had copyrights sold in over 10 countries and have been translated into more than nine languages.
The story of The Magician on the Skywalk takes place in the once thriving Taipei city landmark, Taipei ChungHua Market Bazaar, which was active from the 1960s to the 1980s. Featuring a mystical magician, it links 10 short stories together through magical realism. With the juvenile and innocent view of a child, the novel surveys the cramped and clamorous urban milieu—its grief and joy, life in all of its multiple forms—while at the same time evoking memories of olden times in the city from those who grew up in Taipei.
The Magician on the Skywalk has been successively translated into English, French, Japanese, Korean, and other versions. The English version was shortlisted for UK’s International Booker Prize. Wu Ming-yi is the first Taiwan author to be shortlisted for this award.
