Liāu Sūi-bêng (1955-2016) was a scholar, artist, and social campaigner. He served as a professor in the Department of Taiwanese Languages, director general of the Taiwanese Pen, and the publisher and chief editor of Taiwanese Communication & Literature News. In the 1990s, he began to actively participate in the movement to revive Taiwanese mother languages.
Tip of the Tongue and the Pen: The Development of Literature in Taiwan’s Mother Language focuses on native-language literature developed after the introduction of the mother-tongue revival movement and combs through the evolution of Taiwan’s mother-tongue literature. This book takes the 1980s as the dividing line to designate the native-language creations before the 80s as belonging to the naturally formed writing system before the awakening of mother-tongue consciousness. However, since the 80s, a clear concept of “Mother Tongue-based Literature” has emerged, allowing Taiwan’s native-language literature to flourish in a conscious and organized manner. This book sorts out the processes, controversies, literary associations, and authorial works of Taiwan’s mother-tongue movement and concludes with future prospects for mother-tongue literature. This book documents not only the overall context for the development of Taiwan’s mother tongue-based literature but also the lifetime experiences of the author himself.
