This book takes the topic of ‘How to understand Taiwan’ – all the Taiwan literature and history seen from the third-party or ‘I’ perspective (a project by Huang Yingzhe) – as the point of departure. After 2000, Taiwan was engulfed in presidential election madness and the subsequent transference of power. Under such a political climate, lively debates on the ascertaining of the subjectivity in ethnic groups continued to grip Taiwan, in particular, the issues pertaining to how to view the residual memory lingering in Taiwan, the memory of Japanese imperialist colonization. This is a pivotal factor at play in the ascertaining of subjectivity. What is the extent of the cultural wound inflicted and forcibly left behind by the Empire? In opposition against the ‘memory of the Empire’, what will be uncovered for the Taiwanese in search of a new direction? What are the new directions? This book attempts to address these questions as a launching pad for further discussion on the aforementioned academic project.
