Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series is published with the purpose of introducing to English readers voices of Taiwan literature from recent publications in Taiwan, namely, Taiwanese writers’ and scholars’ viewpoints on their own literature. This is to promote a better understanding and effective knowledge among scholars abroad of the current state and tendencies of literature as it has developed in Taiwan, as well as to enhance the study of Taiwan literature from international perspectives. The contents of each issue comprise critiques, fiction, essays, poems, and studies; and publication, selection of articles, and translation into English are carried out by the Forum for the Study of World Literatures in Chinese under the aegis of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Since 1996, when this journal was first launched, they have asserted that Taiwan literature be studied from international perspectives. For each issue in the past, we have selected a theme to illustrate a conspicuous feature of Taiwan literature, such as Taiwan literature under Japanese rule, aboriginal and nativist voices of Taiwan literature, social concerns, urban literature and the fin de siècle, travel and returning to the homeland, nature and environment, folk literature, children’s literature, women’s literature, history, and folklore and festival. Taiwan literature comprises literary works that express such a consciousness with artistic qualities. They hope to continue introducing many other voices of Taiwan literature, so as to promote better understanding among scholars abroad of the current state and tendencies of literature as it has developed in Taiwan, as well as to enhance the study of Taiwan literature from international perspectives. The publisher was transferred to US-Taiwan Literature Foundation from January 2011, and then to National Taiwan University Press from July 2015. Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series has continued in publication until today.
