When will Thee Come Again—the Death of a Big Star is written by the Taiwanese writer Ping Lu. The hint is given by the subtitle “The death of a big star”, although the name of the star is never mentioned, the reader can tell right away when they read the book that this is a story about the death of Teresa Teng—a famous singer who was very popular in Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong and China. The book is presented as a “novel”, where the cause of death is left out, and the name, Teresa Teng, is also deliberately omitted in the Japanese translation of the book. Instead, it is themed after the mysterious death of a certain well-known singer, who is also the protagonist in the book. Teng, the singer, passed away unexpectedly in May 1995 at Chiang Mai, Thailand, an incident that also instantly caused a huge furor in Japan’s television and weekly magazines. A number of books were published devoted to the discussion of Teng’s death.
