Taiwan literature, of which the beginning of the history could be traced back to 1653, has been built on the land and the people in Taiwan, and, as the history goes by, has been developed into unique cultural style influenced by Chinese and Japanese cultures. Unlike the social culture in China, Taiwan is an immigrant society ruled successively by Netherlands, Spain, Kingdom of Tungning, Qing dynasty and Japan. Under the affection of the historical background of the time, authors from different eras of Taiwan created variable literal styles different from Chinese and Japanese Literature. Yeh Shih-tao, born in Tainan in 1925, started writing his first novel at the age of 16. He experienced the Japanese rule, as well as the white terror lasted for decades afterwards. Finally, he collected the relevant documents about the development of Taiwan literature, and published The History of Taiwan Literature in 1987. The book has become one of the ways for scholars around the world to be familiar with Taiwan literature. The translator Dr. Kim Sang-Ho, born in Seoul in 1961, is an associate professor of Department of Tourism and Recreation Management at Taiwan Hsiuping University of Science and Technology. He has translated lots of Chinese poetry selections into Korean.
