  • Abstract

Chang Ying-Tai (1965-) graduated from the Department of Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University and is now Distinguished Professor at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Over the past decades, she has garnered numerous literary awards and was the recipient of Lennox Robinson Literary Award in 2015. According to legend, when the Kuomintang (KMT) retreated from China after losing the civil war to the Communists, they came to Taiwan on a ship loaded with their gold. Against this backdrop, Chang’s full-length historical novel As Flowers Bloom and Wither tells a story of a family fleeing to Taiwan on the ship. Assigned to different secret missions, the family members undergo a series of adventures and conspiracies, experiencing love, loyalty, and betrayal. And the truth is finally revealed in the 21st century when the archives from Russia, China, and Japan are researched and compared with one another. It is a historical novel full of suspense and mysteries, spanning sixty years since the 1940s. Instead of depicting the conflict between right and wrong, the author acknowledges in the novel that the tragedy of human history is caused by the conflict between two equally mistaken choices.
