Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Ping Lu, the pen name of Lu Ping, is a novelist and essayist. She emerged as a rising star in the 1980s due to her ambitious writing project probing the intersection of gender, identity, technology, politics, and history. The collection of short stories Death in the Cornfield focuses on the lives of overseas Taiwanese. The titular story “Death in the Cornfield” appears as a detective story concerning the mysterious suicide of Chen Hsi-shan who was once an idealist with a great faith in the future of socialist China. In search of the true cause of his death, the narrator working as a journalist undertakes his own internal journey and eventually experiences disillusionment with the American dream, romantic love and marriage as well as patriotism and idealism. It is a story full of rich images and psychological complexities, with the cornfield as the main setting carrying different meanings, including entangled reality and the American dream as well as the homeland he misses and the womb of rebirth. Ping Lu was born in 1953, and over the past three decades, she has published dozens of novels, short-story collections, and essay collections and established herself as a prominent novelist, columnist, social critic, and public intellectual in Taiwan and abroad.
