Shih Shu-ching was born in Lugang and is the sister of writer Li Ang. In 1978, she moved to Hong Kong where she became director of Asian programs at the Hong Kong Arts Centre and published a short-story collection One Night Journeys: Hong Kong Stories (1985) and Hong Kong Trilogy (1993, 1995, 1997). Her Name is Butterfly is the first novel of the trilogy. The protagonist of Hong Kong Trilogy is Huang Deyun, a daughter of a peasant family in China forced into prostitution in Hong Kong. In terms of class politics, Huang Deyun’s upward movement on the social class ladder coincides with her abandoning prostitution, a life trajectory allegorizing Hong Kong’s rapid economic development, implicitly embracing a capitalist view of history as linear, progressive, and developmental. Thus, prostitutes surviving at the bottom of society as well as housewives, concubines and female servants imprisoned in the households are underrepresented as the subaltern and deprived of their voices. It is these complexities, ambiguities, and contradictions that constitute Shih Shu-ching’s ambitious literary work Hong Kong Trilogy.
