Born in Tainan, Taiwan, Su Wei-chen (1954-) is the author of more than a dozen volumes of fiction and nonfiction, including this novel Island of Silence (1994). The novel’s protagonist, the twenty-six-year old Chen-mien, is a mixed-blood woman speaking several languages, traveling in different countries, and interested in only foreign men and corporeal pleasure. The other heroine with the same name obviously serves as a counterpart, but unlike the rootless and restless Chen-mien, this alternative character leads a simple life and yearns for genuine love. The two heroines with the same name surprisingly never interact with each other in the novel and each appears as an isolated island of her own. The doubling structure of the novel represents a provocative, perplexing exploration of the formation of women's selfhood and implies the contingency of life that one is doomed to encounter in the age of increasing globalization. This novel received the China Times Million Dollar Literary Prize for the Novel and was translated into English by Jeremy Tiang in 2013. In addition to her creative writing, Su Wei-chen has published two books on Eileen Chang and is currently a professor of Chinese literature at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan.
