Yu Lihua was born in Shanghai in 1931 and went to university in Taiwan. After graduating from National Taiwan University in history, she went to the United States to pursue her graduate degree in journalism at UCLA and later taught Chinese literature in the Department of Comparative Literature at the State University of New York. Her novel Seeing Palm Trees Again, published in 1967, tells a story of the protagonist Tien-lei who has spent ten years in the United States and finally earned his Ph.D. degree. When he returns to Taiwan, his first love has already been married and the fiancée his parents arrange for him is dreaming of studying abroad. The novel deals with the loneliness, confusion, and disillusionment of overseas Taiwanese students. Rather than a linear narrative, the novel employs the stream of consciousness technique by switching between the past, the present, and the future as well as different locations such as China, Taiwan, and the United States in a disjunctive manner. By putting together a broad spectrum of sensory impressions, this full length novel creates a sensual world that is more real than reality and truer than true history.
