Born in Johor, West Malaysia, in 1967, Ng Kim Chew attended college in Taiwan and received his Ph.D. degree in Chinese Literature from National Tsing Hua University. He is a Chinese-Malaysian fiction writer living in Taiwan and currently a professor at National Chi Nan University. Influenced by modernism, his work often combines modernist aesthetics with local colors of his birthplace. This collection of short stories The Fish Skeleton, published in 1995, consists of Ng Kim Chew’s best works characterized by tropical exoticism and mysterious Chineseness. Besides the exotic atmosphere, these stories often appear peculiar and thick with image. Through the use of literary tropes, these stories allegorize the cultural predicaments and identity politics of diasporic Chinese in Malaysian society and reflect upon the psychological complexity and ambivalence of this marginalized group. All the reflections for sure are in resonance with Ng’s ambivalent status as a Chinese-Malaysian writer living in Taiwan. Nowadays Chinese-Malaysian literature written in Taiwan has been considered part of Taiwan literature. Ng Kim Chew has won numerous awards for his fiction, including the United Daily Literary Award and the China Times Literary Award.
