Published in 1991, Professor Peng Jui-chin’s Forty Years of New Literature Movement in Taiwan is one of the most important Taiwan literary histories written during the postwar years. This book traces the origin of modern Taiwan literature to writings of the 1930s under Japanese colonial rule and divides the evolution of Taiwan literature into six periods: 1. The origin of new Taiwan literary movement between 1920 and 1945 2. The early postwar period (1945-1949) under KMT rule but before the KMT retreated from China 3. New literature during the White Terror in the 1950s 4. Nativist versus modernist literature in the 1960s 5. Realist literature and localization movement in the 1970s 6. The rise of woman’s literature, eco-literature, urban literature, and aboriginal literature in the 980s. Unlike the previous literary histories that subsume Taiwan literature under the umbrella of Chinese literature, Professor Peng’s history of new Taiwan literature has contributed to the establishment of the discipline of Taiwan literary studies as well as the rediscovery and re-evaluation of Taiwan literature as a whole. Born in 1947, Prof. Peng has been a renowned literary critic and scholar. He still teaches in the Department of Taiwanese Literature at Providence University in Taiwan and specializes in classical Taiwan literature, Hakka literature, aboriginal literature, and Taiwan literary history.
